Dealing with Burnout - Recocgnise It, Challenge It, Conquer It

#33: Dealing with Burnout – Recognise it, Challenge it, Conquer it!

What You'll Learn

Starting a new business can be exciting, but it can be hard too. Sometimes you're left buzzing, other times you feel you are about to crash and burn.

I thought it would be easy starting a business in an area I'd had decades of experience in. I soon realised how naive I was.

There are many new challenges in being an entrepreneur. Working in a business provides only limited experience for running a business. It's never long until you figure out it’s a lot tougher than you thought. It's no wonder then that so many entrepreneurs complain of burnout.

Therapist Sherrie Bourg Carter Psy.D. defines burnout as:

“a state of chronic stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion.”

I've had a lot of people tell me over the years they're burnt out - some quite recently. Indeed this episode was inspired by one such person.

Running your own business does mean that you get to call the shots. However, it comes with so many challenges that can wear you down and suck the enjoyment from what you do.

You may have already hit some challenges, like finding there are not enough hours in the day, mile-long to-do lists or finding that instead of being the boss, you've traded your old boss for a set of new bosses all whom you call "clients."

Burnout is a serious issue

In this podcast, I offer you some really practical tips and sensible advice to see it through and come out on top.

If you already suspect you're approaching burnout, or perhaps you are in denial, listen to the early warning signs in this podcast as there are some things you can do about it.

Burnout may only be temporary, but it could also be a serious symptom of a more chronic condition needing medical attention, so do give it some serious thought.

And, depending on your answer to one particular question I ask in this episode, you may get some surprising advice from me you might never associate with a small business coach.
